October 4, 2023
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a surgeon recommended technique used for Post Surgical healing for post operative plastics. Post operative inflammation and swelling are all common side effects of surgery as the lymph system can be overloaded due to the trauma associated with the surgery.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a hands-on technique that utilizes and activates the lymphatic system to work towards draining the excess fluid associated with post operative swelling, promoting overall recovery. This technique aids in accelerating the wound healing process, prevents fibrosis (scar tissue), and also has an analgesic effect. MLD is necessary for the patients ideal aesthetic outcome.
What are the Main Benefits?
- Reduced Swelling: MLD can help reduce post-surgical swelling by facilitating the movement of excess fluid from the surgical site. This can lead to improved comfort and mobility for the patient.
- Improved Circulation: By stimulating the lymphatic system, MLD can enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to the tissues, which can promote healing and tissue regeneration.
- Pain Management: MLD is often associated with pain relief and relaxation. It can help reduce discomfort and tension in the affected area, which can be particularly beneficial during the recovery process.
- Scar Tissue Management: MLD may help prevent or minimize the formation of scar tissue by promoting healthy tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation.
- Immune System Support: The lymphatic system plays a vital role in the body’s immune function. By improving lymphatic circulation, MLD may enhance the body’s ability to fight infection and support overall immune health.
- Faster Recovery: The combination of reduced swelling, improved circulation, and pain relief can contribute to a faster and smoother recovery process for some individuals.
